Transition and Employment
Transition Assistance Program
The Transition Assistance Program is designed to make separation or retirement from service a well-planned, organized and thoughtful progression that empowers Service Members to make informed career decisions, be competitive in a global workforce and become positive contributors to their communities. The mandatory components of TAP are applicable to all Service Members who have at least 180 continuous days or more on active duty; this includes National Guard and Reserve. Transition activities must begin 365 days before transition and may begin as early as 24 months prior to retirement. Please call (719) 567-3920 to enroll.
Individualized Initial Counseling (IC)
Individualized Initial Counseling (IC) is the official start to the transition process. Separating and retiring service members need to schedule this appointment NLT 365 days before their transition date. Retiring members are encouraged to schedule two years before retirement. During the IC session, members complete a personal self-assessment plan and begin to develop their individual Transition PLan to include a Track and Tier placement. The IC is an individual appointment being conducted in person. All documents must be completed prior to their appointment and emailed back to their counselor at least 24 hours in advance of their appointment. Dependents are welcome to attend.
Pre-Separation Counseling
The Pre-separation Counseling commences once the IC session is complete and is also due no less than a year before a service member plans to officially leave the military. This workshop is packed with by-law information regarding various benefits, programs and services to assist transitioning service members to become familiar with the available resources. Dependents are welcome to attend.
Transition Assistance Program Workshop
Transition Assistance Program (TAP) Workshop area multi-day workshops presented by the M&FRC, Department of Labor (DOL) and the Department of Veteran Affairs. The M&FRC topics include resiliency, managing your transition, military to civilian occupational specialty code and post-transition financial planning. The DOL will cover the Employment Fundamentals of Career Transition. The VA will present various programs and services available. Additional tracks are available to service members based on your transition goals and needs. These include employment, vocational, education, or entrepreneurship. They are provided by experts in these fields such as the Department of Labor, Education Center, and Small Business Association. Dependents are welcome to attend.
Capstone ( Finalizing DD Form 2648)
The final piece of the TAP process. At the Capstone Appointmet, the transition counselor will certify that the service members have completed all the Career Readiness Standards, ensuring the service member’s preparedness to successfully transition from military to civilian life. The Capstone must be completed no less than 90 days before the final out-processing date. Please call (719) 567-3920 to schedule Capstone.
Accessing Higher Education (CRS)
*These CRS are in addition to the CRS previously listed if your plan is to pursue Higher Education*
- Completed an Individual Assessment Tool-Assesses aptitudes, interests, strengths, or skills to assist member to make decisions about selecting higher education and career technical training toward a desired future career field
- Completed comparison of higher education or career technical training institution options
Completed application or received acceptance letter from a higher education or career technical training institution - Confirmed one-on-one counseling with higher education or career technical training institution advisor via telephone, e-mail, or letter
The Capstone eform DD Form 2648 must be signed by the member and the Transition Counselor as well as the member’s squadron Commander to verify and approve that all TAP congressional mandates were complete and that the Career Readiness Standards were met prior to the member’s final out-processing appointment

Department of Labor Employment Workshop (DOLEW
The Department of Labor offers DOLEW, a two-day employment-focused workshop that covers best practices for career development. The workshop includes in-depth training on building an effective resume, networking, job searching, interviewing skills and negotiation strategies.
Accessing Higher Education Track
Offered by the Installation Education Office, Service members pursuing college education will receive guidance to prepare for the college application process. The Education Track addresses topics such as identifying one’s educational goals, education funding, and researching and comparing institutions. Upon completion, servicemembers will be prepared to submit an application to an academic institution, schedule a session with a counselor from the institution and connect with a Student Veterans Organization on campus as well as meet with a counselor for individualized preparation.
Career Exploration & Planning Track (CEPT)
Offered by the Department of Labor, Service members pursuing further technical training will receive guidance and help in selecting schools and technical fields. The Career Exploration & Planning Track will address topics such as selection of reputable career and technical training school, application processes, how to certification finder web tools and other pertinent internet resources that identify licensed occupations, and a military occupational code translator. Upon completion, members will be able to submit applications to technical training institutes/schools/programs, schedule sessions with a program counselor, and connect with Student Veteran Organizations at that particular vicinity for one-on-one assistance.
SBA Entrepreneurship Track
The SBA Entrepreneurship Track, titled Boots to Business, is an “Introduction to Entrepreneurship” course that provides participants with a foundational understanding of business ownership. After completing the Introduction to Entrepreneurship course, participants can choose to further their studies through one of the multi-week online B2B follow-on courses or take advantage of the many resources and services offered by the SBA and its partner network, including Veterans Business Outreach Centers, SCORE, Small Business Development Centers, and Women’s Business Centers. Dependents are welcome to attend.
Career and Credential Exploration (C2E)
C2E offers a unique opportunity for participants to complete a personalized career development assessment to identify occupational interest and ability. Participants are guided through a variety of career considerations including labor market projections, education, apprenticeships, certifications and licensure requirements.
Education Track
The Education Track, titled Managing Your (MY) Education, helps service members identify the higher education requirements that align with their personal career goals. This two-day workshop is divided into the following topic areas: understanding the basics, choosing a field of study, selecting an institution, gaining admission, and funding higher education. The workshop is beneficial for both service members attending college for the first time and those applying to graduate programs. Throughout the workshop, participants conduct research as each topic is presented and complete a comparison of at least two institutions of higher education.

Spouse Relicensure/Recertification Reimbursement
In an effort to ease the burden of PCSing/PCAing, the Space Force is reimbursing up to $500 for servicemember’s spouses’ occupational state re-licensing and re-certification costs incurred due to a qualifying PCS/PCA. My Career Advancement Account (My CAA)-My CAA Scholarship
Workforce development program that provides up to $4,000 of tuition assistance to eligible military spouses to pursue licenses, certificates, certifications, or associate degrees in high demand, portable career fields. Eligibility requirements are as follows, Spouses of Active Duty Members pay grades of E1-E5, W1-W2, and O1-O2, who have successfully completed high school and spouses of National Guard and Reserve of the same pay grades are eligible as well

Air Force Aid Society (AFAS)-Spouse Employment Grant
The Air Force Aid Society in partnership with the Military & Family Readiness Center provides Spouse Employment Training, on an annual basis, to five spouses stationed at Schriever SFB. The grant program seeks to address the employment challenges military spouses face when PCSing. These grants will provide spouses with an opportunity to obtain training to assist in the pursuit of a mobile career. Information and applications are made available in late March as applicants are chosen in May. Air Force Wounded Warrior Program (AW2)
The Air Force Wounded Warrior Program (AFW2) is a congressionally mandated and federally funded program that provides personalized care, services and advocacy to total force seriously wounded, ill and injured Recovering Service Members (RSMs). This program focuses on specific personal and family needs through personalized support and advocacy. AFW2 support includes Recovery Coordination Program, Family Liaison Officer Program (FLO), Caregiver Support Program, and Special Compensation for Assistance with Activities of Daily Living (SCAADL) Program, Emergency Family Member Travel Program (EFMT), Adaptive & Rehabilitative Sports Program, Recovering Airman Mentorship Program (RAMP), and Career Readiness Programs
Eligibility:
Active Duty members who have been:
Identified as SI/VSI on a Casualty Morning Report or by a Medical Authority, Airmen with highly complex medical conditions as provided by a Medical Authority, Medical diagnosis of PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), or MST
Air Reserve Components (ARC) who are:
Retained for more than 6 months on Title 10 medical orders (Serious/Severe Conditions),
Returned to Title 10 orders for deployment related condition(s) (Serious/Severe Conditions)
**Those eligible for AFW2 will be connected with a local Recovery Care Coordinator**
Installation Voting Assistance Office (IVAO)
Under the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA), IVAO’s and Unit Voting Assistant Officers (UVAO’s) will support absentee voting rights to service members, their eligible family members and overseas citizens through individual assistance and outreach
Federal Post Card Application (FPCA)
The FPCA is a form for UOCAVA citizens to simultaneously register to vote and request an absentee ballot. The FPCA will also update the individual’s contact information.
Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot (FWAB)
The FWAB is an emergency backup ballot for UOCAVA citizens who did not receive an absentee ballot from their State in a timely manner to participate in the election.
